MARGAO
After spending a whopping Rs 9-10 crore on the bio-remediation of the Sonsodo waste dump yard last year, the government has in principle accorded its nod to set up “Black Hole” “ a US patented waste disposal machine, which operates on Plasma Heat Technology.
An inspection of the Sonsodo dump yard was carried out by representatives of Anant Raj Power Ltd along with Margao Municipal officials on Tuesday, even as Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer, Johnson Fernandes said the Municipality will deliberate on the technology, adopt a resolution and dispatch the same to the Solid Waste Management Corporation for implementation of the project. Sources do not rule out the possibility of the new proposal coming up at the Council meeting scheduled on Wednesday.
TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai, who has put up a note to the Margao Municipal Council, expressing the government’s willingness to go for the Plasma Heat Technology to rid Sonsodo of the 60,000 cubic meters of existing waste, said the government has in principle agreed to go for the new technology, which has received the go-ahead signal from the Pollution Control Board as well.
“I have had discussions with representatives of the company, who are willing to set up the Black Hole, waste disposal machine at Sonsodo. As a pilot project, the company is ready to carry out treatment of the waste free of cost for 15 days”, Sardesai said, while making clear that the company will only tackle the waste which is not handled by the existing concessionaire.
The TCP Minister said the government had last year spent around Rs 9-10 crore on Sonsodo to tackle the existing waste and managed to clear around 25 per cent of the dump. He, however, said the government did a re-think on continuation with the bio-remediation project since tons of plastic waste continued to be dumped on the existing dump yard, rendering the project futile. “This government has accorded utmost importance to the clearance of Sonsodo waste. This is evident by the fact that the first media briefing of the government was held at Sonsodo by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar along with me,” he recalled.
“The Black Hole machine works on the Plasma Heat Technology, implying there is no electricity or oil for primary equipment. The biggest advantage of this technology is that it avoids land filling and dump yards, reducing the volume of MSW in the ratio of 1/200-1/300 times the input waste”, he said, adding that bio-remediation project had faced the road block for want of suitable land to dump the rejects.
The company, which has set up the Black Hole at Bangalore, said the new technology enjoys many advantages over the conventional methods of treating waste. “It is an unique equipment which used Plasmic Heat Decomposition Method, without using electricity, fuel or oil. Helps prevent air, soil and ground water by not having the need for land-fills. As compared to incinarators, which operate on high temperature and require an input energy source and secondary combustion system, the Black Hole requires no such energy. The residue that remains is ceramic/fly ash, which can be used in the brick making industry and land filling. It eradicates all sceptic/poisonous substances (example hospital syringes and other contagious substances like virus and bacteria).
The Black Hole comes in a compact form, ranging form five tons to 200 tons and can be set up within a space
admeasuring 1000 sq ft to 2000 sq ft.
