MAPUSA
The President of the Mapusa Urban Co-op Bank (MUCB) employees union, Subash Naik Jorge on Sunday said the government should immediately take over the bank in the interest of the customers and employees of the bank.
“The government should immediately step in and take over the bank, as the board of directors has expressed its wish to resign. The government should take over and put it on rails in the same manner they have done with Goa State Coop Bank,” Jorge said.
The President of the MUCB employees union and the MUCB officers association was addressing the media after attending a joint meeting of the staff and the officers at the head office, Mapusa to discuss the issue of RBI restrictions on the bank.
“In view of the latest development, bank management, RBI and government must find an immediate solution to the problem because customers, society, and advisory officers are suffering,” he said adding that if a solution was not arrived at, bank employees were prepared to come on the streets.
To a question, Jorge said absence of the chief minister was also contributing to the problem.
“The CM’s absence will definitely have some effect, as we need persons who can take decisions. There’s nobody at the helm of the State who is able to take decisions. So the bank, customer, staff… everybody is suffering,” he said.
MUCB Chairman, Gurudas Natekar who was summoned at the meeting agreed to discuss the issue with the staff and accordingly a meeting has been fixed for Tuesday at 6 pm.
Earlier, while addressing the employees, Jorge said the bank cannot shut down in view of its solid customer base, depositors, loanees, staff etc. He said if the government cannot run the bank on its own, it should explore the idea of merging it with another bank.
Slamming the BoDs, he said the staff had to unnecessary face the brunt for decisions taken by the bank’s management. “The salary of the staff has been credited into their bank accounts but they have not been allowed to withdraw the salary due to RBI curbs,” he said.
The agitated employees demanded immediate resignation of the entire board of directors.
