Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Sunday announced that the Government will soon introduce a pension scheme for journalists above 50 years of age and a special subsidy scheme for journalists to purchase e-vehicles, cameras, laptops and mobile phones.

“Journalists who have been serving selflessly and sincerely in rural areas for many years are finally receiving due recognition from the Government. We are committed to addressing their concerns,” said Dr Sawant while speaking as chief guest at the ‘Journalists’ Family Gratitude Ceremony’ organised by Ravindra Bhavan, Sanquelim, in association with the All Goa Rural Journalists’ Association on National Journalists’ Day.

During the event, family members of rural journalists from across Goa were felicitated by the Chief Minister in recognition of their support and contribution.

Dr Sawant stressed the importance of responsible journalism in the age of social media, where misinformation and rumours spread quickly. He urged journalists to focus on facts and truth rather than sensationalism. “Write the truth, not merely what sounds good,” he said, adding that journalists have a greater responsibility to verify information before publication and prevent the spread of content that can create social tension.

He said journalism plays an important role in achieving the vision of a Developed India and Developed Goa. A journalist, he added, is not only a reporter but also a guide to society, a creator of public opinion and a bridge between the Government and people.

Dr Sawant also appealed to parents to provide proper values and guidance to children so that the younger generation contributes positively to nation-building.

Padmini Foundation Chairperson Sulakshana Sawant highlighted the contribution of journalists’ families, saying their patience, sacrifice and support enable journalists to perform their duties effectively.

The programme included a special interaction between senior journalist Vishwanath Nene and Mumbai-based journalist Namrata Wagle on the changing role of journalism, women in media and challenges faced by journalists. The event was attended by government officials, journalists and their families from across Goa.
