The State government has constituted a three-member committee to look into the issue of regularization of contract/daily wages labourers in urban local bodies in
the State.
The committee will be headed by former Mapusa Municipal Council, chairperson, Sandip Falari, while chairperson of Ponda Municipal Council, Radhika Nayak and Commissioner of Corporation of the City of Panaji will be the other two members of the committee.
The Director of Urban Development, J Ashok Kumar, issued the order constituting the three-member committee.
The committee will study the matter of regularization of contract and daily wages labourers in detail in consultation with Minister of Urban Development, Francis D’Souza, and all urban local bodies.
Further, the committee is required to submit a report to the government on proposed course of action within 15 days.
Speaking to The Goan, the committee chairman, Sandip Falari said he has received the order through an email on Saturday and was keen to begin work from Monday.
“Mapusa Municipal Council has already passed a resolution to regularize contract workers who have been employed for the last seven years. I will meet the heads of other urban local bodies to find if they have passed similar resolutions and to collect any other data on contract workers,” Falari said.
Regularization of employees working on daily wages in municipal councils was a long pending demand of the Goa Municipal Employees Association (GMEA).
“The association has raised the issue of regularization of daily wage workers before all the governments earlier. In one of the meetings with the government, it was decided to regularize the service of daily wage workers in two batches “ first of those who have completed seven years and then for those who have completed five years,” said Keshav Prabhu, President, GMEA.
“At least 500 daily wage workers stand to benefit if government regularizes their service,” he added.
Among urban local
bodies, the State has 13 municipal councils and one corporation “ CCP.
