Panaji: The Goenchea Raponkarancho Ekvott (GRE), representing the interests of the local fishing community in Goa, has called for the resignation of the state's Director of Fisheries, Sharmila Monteiro. The group alleges that Monteiro is promoting policies that are harmful to local fishers.
GRE’s Olencio Simoes he said that Monteiro is supporting the use of LED lights and large generator sets, ranging from 60 to 150kVA, on fishing boats. The organization argues that these practices encourage destructive fishing methods, which could devastate the local fishing community.
The matter is currently under consideration in court, with the High Court hearing the case. When asked for a response, Sharmila Monteiro stated, "The matter is sub judice, and as it is being heard by the High Court, I cannot comment further."
The GRE submitted a formal memorandum to the Director, demanding her resignation and accusing her of being complicit in promoting policies that they believe will harm the traditional fishing practices of Goa.
