The much-touted four-lane new Tar Bridge across the Mapusa River is expected to be constructed before the onset of the next monsoon giving much relief to people from Aldona and Mapusa.
The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) will be issuing a tender for the construction of the new Tar Bridge within 15 days and complete the project within five months.
A four-lane bridge of 30-metre span is expected to be built across the Tar River which includes channelization, protective measures, illumination and construction of traffic islands on both sides of the bridge.
As per the plans, the existing single-lane bridge will be demolished and a new four-lane bridge will come up in its place at an estimated cost of Rs 9 crore.
“We have drawn up the plans to construct the new Tar Bridge. The tender for the project will be issued within the next 15 days. The bridge will be constructed within five to six months,” said Jude Carvalho, General Manager of GSIDC.
The earlier plan of demolishing a couple of kiosks to make way for the new bridge has been shelved.
“As per the new plans the bridge will be constructed in such a way that no structures will have to be demolished,” Carvalho said.
He said one of the two-lane bridges will be constructed first and only then the present single-lane bridge will be demolished and work on the other two-lane bridge will be taken up in its place.
The present single lane Tar Bridge witnessed constant traffic jams on account of its narrow width. The new bridge is expected to reduce the pressure of traffic inflow.
