MARGAO
Day two of Goa State Pollution Control Board’s mission Cuncolim Industrial Estate saw workers of the Board scanning the premises of fish meal and processing units for illegal bore wells used to discharge untreated effluents.
Equipped with ground penetration radars, GSPCB workers went about the job of ascertaining the presence of illegal borewells. The team armed with breakers was seen excavating concrete to find out illegal borewells.
When The Goan called up GSPCB Member Secretary Dr Shamila Monteiro said the team was on the job during the last two days to find out illegal bore wells dug by the units and to seal them.
The GSPCB had requisitioned the services of the South Goa demolition squad to carry out the operation of excavating the earth, including the concrete, in order to find out the number of illegal
borewells dug to discharge the effluents and to seal them.
The illegal bore wells dug up by the erring units to discharge effluents had sparked outrage and anger in Cuncolim since the expert committee unearthed a number of underground borewells around the fish meal and processing units. In fact, demands have been pouring in to shut down the erring units and to penalize them under the polluter pays principle.
