Goa University initiated recruitment to various teaching posts and has hiked reservations following a University Grants Commission (UGC) direction which considers the university as a unit for implementation of reservation as per the new reservation formula.
Under the new formula, the number of reserved posts has increased substantially.
The central government passed ‘the central educational institution (Reservation in Teachers Cadre) ordinance 2019’ marking 15 per cent for Scheduled Castes, seven and half per cent for Scheduled tribes and 27 per cent for socially and educationally backward classes considering the university as a unit for implementation of reservation.
The UGC has directed universities to recruit as per the new ordinance.
Earlier the teachers’ posts were filled on department specific basis. As many departments had limited professor posts, the number of reserved posts filled were very few. Hence, the central government has come up with a new formula.
With the new rule, out of 54 new advertised posts for assistant professor/associate professor, 6 posts are reserved for ST, 1 for SC and 13 are reserved for OBC.
The University has asked for Associate Professor Post in the reserved category in Political Science, Portuguese, Computer Science and Technology, History, Latin American Studies, Chinese, Microbiology, Economics, Earth Science and Konkani.
Assistant Professor posts are also reserved for Mathematics, Analytical Chemistry and Philosophy.
The Goa University has also invited applications for filling six backlog (third time) Assistant Professor posts in reserved category (2 OBC, 3 ST, 1 SC) for Konkani, Marathi, History, Philosophy, Mathematics, Physical Chemistry.
However, with Lok Sabha election dates declared and the Model Code of Conduct coming into force, it is uncertain whether the recruitment process will go ahead.
