MARGAO
Goa University Vice-Chancellor Varun Sahni on Thursday has expressed his concern over the neglect of vocational side of education, but neglecting in a fundamental way, value education.
Addressing the teaching and non-teaching staff of the Archdiocese Board of Education, besides students at the All Goa Catholic Educational Institution Day celebrations at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on Thursday, Sahni underlined the need to desperately think of how to inculcate values in the educational system. “What bothers me the most is the way in which I fear sometimes that we ignore the heart.
It is not just the vocational side of education which we have been neglecting, but we are neglecting in a fundamental way, value education,”
he said.
Sahni, however, said the educational institutions run by the Archdiocese Board of Education, in some ways are institutions that stand out as they attempt to keep values at the core of the teaching-learning process.
He lamented that the prevailing education system is only educating the half side of the brain, only the left side to think rationally. “We tend to ignore the right side which deals with creativity and innovation. Skills get better with practice. Unfortunately, our system is not tuned to that kind of improvement of one’s abilities,” he said, while stressing on the need to elevate sports and cultural activity in the educational institutions.
In his address, Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao reminded that Jesus Christ was called the teacher and he was
undoubtedly the most and best outstanding teacher of
all times.
Saying that education by its nature is a transformative process, changing human process and through them society and its structures, the Archbishop said this activity of transformation is a spiritual, humanising and liberating activity and constitutes the core mission of education. “The Church carries out the work of education and transformation because she loves and she loves with the love of Christ. It is the love of Christ that urges us on to educate and transform,” he said.
On the occasion, the
ABE felicitated around 90 teaching and non-teaching staff for serving these educational institutions for 30 years and more.
