Guard held for smuggling cocaine in Colvale Jail

Another jail guard at the Colvale jail has been arrested for allegedly smuggling cocaine meant for one of the inmates, on Wednesday.

This is the second case within a little over two weeks where a jail guard at the Central Colvale jail has been arrested for sneaking drugs inside the prison.

Colvale Police arrested Suraj Gawade for attempting to smuggle cocaine weighing around 5 grams.

According to Mapusa SDPO, Jivba Dalvi, the prison staff during a routine frisking of the jail staff found the particular jail guard in possession of a suspicious looking substance.

The jail authorities immediately informed the Colvale Police. 

“An Executive Magistrate along with the police conducted a body search of the accused and seized the suspecting substance which upon verifying was found to be cocaine,” Dalvi informed.

The police took the accused into custody and seized the drugs.

The seized cocaine which weighed around 5 grams was meant for one of the under trial prisoners inside the jail, police informed.

An offence under sections 21(b) of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused who has been arrested.

On June 2, a security guard posted at the Colvale jail was nabbed with drugs meant to be supplied to a jail inmate.

The accused guard, Sandesh Varak was held with seven grams of cocaine and 208 grams of ganja, cumulatively valued at Rs 1 lakh.

PSI Sushant Sangodkar is investigating the present case under the supervision of SP North Shobit Saxena (IPS), SDPO Mapusa Jivba Dalvi and PI Somnath Mahajik.
