Lauding the people of Goa for their unity in diversity, Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Wednesday said people from different religions maintain good relations in the State.
Governor Pillai was addressing a gathering during his visit to Canacona taluka as part of “Sampurna Goa Yatra”, where he disbursed financial assistance of Rs 25,000 each to 15 dialysis patients of Canacona taluka at a function organised at Shristhal panchayat.
Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar accompanied the governor during his day-long visit.
“When the Goa Sampurna Yatra was started 6 months ago, as part of PM's 71st birthday celebration, it was decided to go to the people and distribute financial assistance to 71 dialysis patients and an equal number of institutions. However, we have, till now, distributed financial assistance to over 200 dialysis patients and over 100 Institutions,” said the governor.
While distributing financial assistance to dialysis patients, Governor Pillai expressed concern that Canacona has the highest number of dialysis patients.
“We are trying to make Raj Bhavan people-oriented. Goa is a beautiful gift on earth and the temples, churches and mosques in this State are also a gift of fine architecture and cultural tradition. Whenever I visit temples and churches, unity and diversity is displayed by everyone. People from different religions maintain good relations in Goa,” he said.
Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar also spoke on the occasion, while Khola Sarpanch Poorna Nayak listed some issues affecting residents of Canacona such as mobile network, roads, water, electricity and pending development works.
During his visit, Governor Pillai interacted with the sarpanchas of Khola, Agonda and Shrishthal at Shrishthal panchayat hall and with the sarpanchas of Loliem-Polem, Poinguinim, Gaondongrim and Khotigao at the Forest Guest House, Poinguinim.
Khola Sarpanch Purna Naik raised the issue of internet connectivity. Forest right cases, development of Shree Mallikarjun temple and support price for cashew, setting up of non-polluting industries to resolve unemployment, underground cabling for electricity and restoration of octroi among other issues were raised by sarpanchas and members before Governor.
The governor assured the local elected representatives of full assistance in their future endeavours after the sarpanchas presented a brief report of the development activities in their areas.
Three petitions were submitted to the Governor by Shrishthal Panch Rajesh Gaonkar, Livia Sanju Naik and Agonda Panch Pramod Phaldessai.
Governor Pillai and First Lady of Goa, Adv Rita Sreedharan later visited Shri Mallikarjun temple (Shrishthal) and Shri Parshuram Temple (Poinguinim).
Among the officials accompanying the governor included Additional Collector Surendra Naik, Canacona Dy Collector Udhay Prabhudessai, Mihir Vardhan (Secretary to Governor) and Canacona Mamlatdar Manoj Korgaonkar.
