MAPUSA
Councilor Sushant Harmalkar will officially take over as the Vice-Chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) when the elections for the post will be taken up on Wednesday.
The nomination process conducted on Tuesday saw Harmalkar as the lone nominee to officially enter the race for the coveted role.
Harmalkar submitted his nomination forms to MMC Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar in presence of Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza, MMC Chairperson Nutan Bicholkar, and other members of the ruling coalition.
With no nominations forthcoming from the opposition faction, the path is clear for Harmalkar to ascend to the vice-chairperson’s seat uncontested. The election for the position is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
This development follows the resignation of former vice-chairperson Viraj Phadke, who stepped down as part of a consensus decision within the ruling group of councillors, marking the conclusion of his one-year tenure.
Harmalkar is the President of the BJP Mandal in Mapusa.
