MARGAO
Even as the Purumentachem fair was stopped by the Margao Municipal team on Sunday noon, the fair went on unabated throughout Sunday on the adjoining SGPDA ground, throwing up questions how two yardsticks could be employed when the High Court order is applicable to the MMC and the SGPDA.
Margao Municipal officials pushed the blame on the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) for giving permission for the fair activity till Sunday.
In fact, when the MMC stopped the fair at the MMC parking lot, and customers started moving to the PDA ground, a senior MMC official is belived to have called up the SGPDA member Secretary Sheikh Ali to find out the situation, only to be told that the PDA has issue permission to the fair till Sunday.
“We were helpless in cracking a whip against the fair on the SGPDA ground since the PDA has issued permission for the fair” , a MMC official remarked.
Sources, however, said nothing should have prevented the MMC from stopping the activity on the PDA ground since the Civic body is the licensing authority, more so since the fair activity on the SGDPA ground had exceeded the High Court mandated seven days.
