Even in a small state like Goa with a population under 15 lakh, a fatal road-accident death happens almost every day. Loss of life or a body part in road-related mishaps and other trauma cases are a common occurrence. In such cases, the precise time taken for medical intervention matters the most. With this in mind, Healthway Hospital is conducting a training course in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
ATLS protocols are the gold standard in the management of trauma cases globally. The course is a copyright of American College of Surgeons (ACG).
Dr Amit Kalangutkar, general and hepatobiliary surgeon, Healthway Hospital, said, “There are different kinds of trauma cases. The most severe ones are cases are those where a severe injury affects either the heart, brain or spine, and saving life is not possible even with medical help. But, in the other two types, wherein deaths occur due to an injury to any other body part or due to complications arising out of an injury, it is possible to save life with medical intervention. This is exactly what this course is aimed at.”
Kalangutkar added, “The training will be organised from January 28 - 30. 16 doctors will be attending this training course. Course fees are fixed at Rs 20,000 per person. This is the first time that this training is being held in Goa. If we feel the need, we can conduct this course 4-5 times in a year.”
Healthway Hospital in Mala, Panaji is only the ninth site to get the permission for conducting this training in India. While private hospitals may spend on such training, most people prefer visiting government hospitals or government-run medical health centres in case of any medical need. To this Kalangutkar replied, “We are in talks with the state government to train people manning primary health centres on how to deal with trauma cases as only then will the benefits of such training reach people.”
Meanwhile, Healthway Hospital is also expected to start its services at Kadamba Plateau.
Kalangutkar informed, “Civil work is finished for Healthway Hospital at Kadamba Plateau. Rest of the work will take some time as we are planning to start operations at Kadamba Plateau by April-May this year."
Healthway Hospital is an initiative of 37 doctors from Goa. Phase I of the hospital will have 150 beds and Phase II will have 110 beds.
