A Mapusa court has sentenced one person to life imprisonment for murdering a resident of Porvorim around nine years ago.
The Additional District and Sessions court in Mapusa convicted Vijay Tulshidas Karbotkar, a noted history-sheeter and a resident of Britona in the Lavu Parsekar murder case in Porvorim.
Another accused in the case, Shailesh Naik, was earlier sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment.
The court has sentenced Karbotkar to a lifetime in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
The court also said that Rs 50,000 of the penalty amount should be paid to the family of the deceased.
If the convict fails to pay the fine then he faces an additional jail term of three years.
Incidentally, Karbotkar was involved in the deadly attack against Aldona Sarpanch, Pranesh Naik last year.
Karbotkar who was absconding after the attack on the sarpanch was traced in Delhi by Mapusa Police last month from where he was brought down to Goa and arrested.
He has been lodged in Colvale jail.
The Porvorim attack incident happened on August 14, 2013, near the Sunshine Bar and Restaurant in Porvorim.
The two accused “ Vijay Karbotkar and Shailesh Shailu Dinanath Naik of Batkarvaddo, Porvorim “ got into an altercation with the deceased Lavu Parsekar and attacked him.
Karbotkar stabbed Parsekar in the stomach with a sharp weapon resulting in his death.
The then Porvorim Police Inspectors, Nilesh Rane and Manoj Mardolkar registered the case under section 302 of the IPC and arrested both the accused and filed a chargesheet in the court.
In 2018, the Additional District and Sessions court had convicted one of the accused Shailesh Naik and sentenced him to six months of simple imprisonment.
However, the main accused Vijay Karbotkar was declared a fugitive and an arrest warrant was issued against him.
Adv Anuradha Talavalikar was the Public Prosecutor while Adv Ameya Prabhudesai represented the accused.
