Tonnes of mixed waste dumped at the Aquem ring road dark spot was cleared by the Margao Municipal Council before the operation kicked up a row as the waste along with debris found its way to Sonsodo.
Even as the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has set in motion the process to cart out the piled up waste inside the Sonsodo waste treatment plant, the MMC is believed to have disposed of the mixed waste from the Aquem ring road dark spots into the plant.
Even senior MMC officials were shocked to learn that the mixed waste, including debris, found its way into the Sonsodo waste treatment plant as the civic body was required to transport only the wet waste inside the plant.
Officials said the MMC has almost got rid of the eyesore from the Aquem ring road dark spot by deploying men and heavy machinery to conduct the operation.
Sources said around 400 bags of dry waste was collected from the dark spot and sent for baling. As far as the mixed waste is concerned, around 100 tonnes of the waste was taken to Sonsodo for disposal.
What’s interesting to note is that the GWMC has started carting out the piled waste at Sosnodo and remediating the same outside the plant.
Meanwhile, questions are being raised in municipal circles about whether the civic body has any plans to ensure there’s no more garbage dumping at the Aquem ring road dark spot. For, garbage dumped at the spot was cleared on several occasions in the past, with the waste finding its way days later.
A civic official said the municipality should put a system in place, including a squad, to keep the miscreants dumping waste at bay.
Margao municipal ward councillor Damu Shirodkar has made a humble plea to the people to stop dumping waste at the dark spot, warning that the civic body will initiate strict action against the miscreants, including a penalty.
