MARGAO

With just a few days left for the curtains to come to an end on the fishing season on May 31, Colva-based fish vendors are bracing up for the sale of dry fish at the ensuing Purumentachem Fest at Margao on June 5.
While one has come across fish vendors selling dry fish at Colva, dry fish will be up for sale in a big way at the Purumentachem Fest. The 10-day fair at the Old Market, Margao draws hundreds of customers every year from the nook and corners of Goa, who descend at the fair to make the provision for the ensuing monsoons.
Fish vendor Liberatta Fernandes informed that the vendors have stocked an adequate quantity of dry fish which is now on sale at Colva. She informed that around 100 dry mackerels are presently priced at Rs 700, saying that the rate of mackerels has gone up this year because of the shortage.
Besides mackerels, people come specially to the Purumentachem fest to buy dry fish, including sharks.
Colva village has been a major fish drying site in Salcete, with the fish vendors engaged in the traditional fish drying activity.
