Chief guest Dr Purnanand Chari urged people to rise above region, caste, religion and script in the interest of language unity at the foundation day of the All India Konkani Parishad held on Sunday at Nigdi, Chinchwad, Pune.
He said Konkani has developed through struggle, and people should continue to work for the language and the community.
Chair of the ceremony Melvyn Rodrigues, convenor of the Konkani board at the Sahitya Akademi, said that if people sincerely fulfil their duties towards their language, it will progress along with the community.
Co-organiser Dr Deepali Sawai thanked the Parishad for the opportunity and assured continued support for Konkani-related events.
On this occasion, the Late Rocky Miranda was honoured with the Late Madhav Manjunath Shanbhag Lifetime Achievement Award, received by H M Pernal. Vijayanand Gaitonde, Dr Vaman Naik, Isidore Dantas, Alfi Monteiro and Dr Ashwini Kulkarni were also honoured.
The programme began with the lighting of the lamp, followed by a discussion on ‘Unity of Konkani People in India’ with speakers Titus Noronha, Anant Agni and Remson Vaz, moderated by Ganadhish Prabhudesai. Sneha Sabnis proposed the vote of thanks.
