Hundreds of Goans gathered at the historic Azad Maidan in the capital on Monday evening for a ‘peace protest’ and to highlight injustices including deprivation of the rights of minorities and also action against what they called ‘repeat offenders’ indulging in actions leading to religious polarisation.
The protest was held peculiarly with none in the crowd shouting slogans or causing any commotion. The protest was aimed at drawing the attention of the relevant authorities to certain individuals provoking religious ruckus at Sancoale, where the Catholic community is due to celebrate the feast of St Joseph Vaz, a native Goan and patron saint of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman.
At Sancoale, a small section of Hindus are claiming the existence of a religious site in the precincts of the ruins of the old Sancoale Church which is a heritage site.
