Hundreds of houses were flooded across many villages in Bardez on Thursday, after excess water released from the Tillari Dam caused the Chapora River to overflow into houses located along the riverbanks.
According to reports, water entered an estimated 225 houses in Pirna, Nadora, Revora, Rannaichem-Zuvem and Camurlim, all located along the riverbank.
An estimated 350-400 people were shifted to safer places by multiple rescue teams. About 18 people from Camurlim were shifted to a temple in the village, while 150 houses were flooded in Camurlim alone.
Heavy rains in the Western Ghats filled the Tillari Dam, forcing Maharashtra Irrigation officials to release the excess water from the Tillari Dam on Wednesday.
Water then flooded hundreds of houses along the riverbanks, forcing authorities to evacuate hundreds of stranded people from their homes.
“On Wednesday at about 11 pm, water entered our houses and we panicked, but rescue teams deployed by the government evacuated us to safety,” said one Santosh from Revora.
About 35 people from Rannaichem-Zuvem, 29 people from Revora and 6 people from Nadora were shifted on Wednesday night by rescue teams. The footbridge at Rannaichem-Zuvem was closed and a police team was deployed there to ensure that nobody would proceed towards Juvem.
Camurlim was among the worst affected with an estimated 150 houses getting flooded. Sensing danger, people moved to safer places as water began to enter their houses. Many people took their belonging along with them with the help of canoes. Many people from Bharvanwada, Gaokarwada and Darbarwada were severely affected and 18 people are now taking shelter in a village temple.
Rescue teams from the Mapusa Fire Services, Indian Navy and Drishti lifeguards were pressed into service to evacuate people from the affected villages.
Bardez Deputy Collector Sudhir Kerkar, Mamlatdar Laximikant Kuttikar and their teams inspected flood-affected area and made arrangements to provide food and water to the evacuated families. Local
MLA Nilkhant Halarnkar also visited the affected and assured assistance from the government.
