A 35-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh was found dead in her rented room at New Vaddem, Vasco and her husband, the prime suspect, was later found dead in a suspected suicide at the Konkan railway tracks in Cortalim-Cansaulim.
According to reports, Vasco Police received a call at about 2 pm on Friday stating that one woman was dead in her rented room at New Vaddem. A police team went to the site and found the body of Sangeeta Devi lying on the floor with a head injury.
Mormugao DySP Sucheeta Dessai and Vasco Police PI Sagar Ekoskar also visited the site.
Speaking to The Goan, PI Ekoskar said that the death, prima facie, appeared to be due to strangulation and injury to the back of the head.
“The body will be sent for autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of death,” said PI Ekoskar.
He said the victim's husband, Sunil Kumar, is missing and efforts are on to trace him.
Mohandas Pujari told The Goan that Kumar had been working as a mechanical helper in his workshop 'Mohan Motors' at Chicalim since the last two years. “Kumar recently went to his native place and after returning joined a pharma product unit at Sancoale. Before employing Kumar, the unit owner Alister Martins, who is my customer, sought to know if I had any problem if he employed Kumar. I gave my assent to Martins,” said Pujari.
When contacted, Martins said Kumar along with his wife started working with him from February 18, and had shifted in his rented room at New Vaddem since the last three days.
“Kumar was working as a helper, while his wife was working in housekeeping and they were supposed to shift to another location at Zuari Nagar,” informed Martins and added that on Thursday, the husband and wife started fighting in the factory and he told them that their fight would disturb his other employees.
“I advised them to leave the job, which they agreed and at about 9.30 am, Sangeeta called me asking whether they should leave the rented room and I told them to do so,” he said.
“On Friday afternoon, my neighbour informed that he had heard the couple fighting in their room on Thursday afternoon and sensing trouble, I requested a friend to go and investigate and if the door was open, to place a new lock,” said Martins.
Martins added that when his friend reached the room, he found the room locked and on breaking open the door, he found Sangeeta Devi lying dead.
Martins said he immediately informed the police.
His neighbours said they saw Sunil Kumar leaving the rented room alone at about 4.30 pm.
Later on Friday evening, Vasco police was informed that a male body had been severed in two pieces at the Cortalim-Cansaulim Konkan railway tracks.
The deceased was later identified as the accused, Sunil Kumar Gautam, prime suspect in the murder of his wife Sangeeta Devi at New Vaddem.
The voting card of Kumar and the Aadhar card of Sangeeta was found at the site, leading police to suspect that Kumar had committed suicide after murdering his wife.
The Vasco police and Konkan Railway police are investigating both incidents.
