Hyderabad team tests fragile Agonda bridge

A Mobile Bridge Inspection Unit (MBIU) team from Shri Infotech in Hyderabad has carried out a Core Cutting Test to check the strength and stability of the 50-year-old Saleri bridge in Agonda, which is at risk of collapsing.

The MBIU team used a specialised crane to lower technicians to conduct the core-cutting tests and check the bridge’s structural integrity.

During the test, traffic on the MDR-49 road, especially for heavy vehicles like buses, trucks and cars, was stopped for around two-and-a-half hours. Two-wheelers were allowed to pass by the crane placed on one side of the bridge. Police helped in managing the traffic while the MBIU team carried out the tests.

The fragile two-span Saleri bridge is the only connection on the MDR-49 road between Agonda and Khola. One side of the bridge on the Khola end appears to have sunk slightly, and cracks have been seen on both spans and the pillar.

After residents of both villages raised concerns last year, a team of PWD engineers and consultants inspected the bridge in February, but no repair work was carried out.
