Delilah Lobo, ESG Vice chairperson

Alleged overdose of Bollywood, uncomfortable questions by producer Shailendra Singh to Hollywood celebrity Michael Douglas, and fewer Goan cinemas were among issues that revolved around IFFI 2023. ESG’s Vice Chairperson Delilah Lobo addressed these issues in an interview with The Goan.

The Goan: Do you believe IFFI 2023 experienced an overdose of Bollywood, with a higher presence of B-town celebrities compared to other film industries?

Delilah Lobo: IFFI aims to be a diverse platform, celebrating cinema from various regions. While Bollywood does have a significant presence, we also strive to showcase films from different industries. The selection process is meticulous and our goal is to represent the rich tapestry of global cinema.

TG: How do you respond to producer Shailendra Singh’s sexually coloured remarks on Hollywood celebrity Michael Douglas during a master class? Do you think it was offensive despite Singh later apologizing?

DL: We acknowledge Shailendra Singh’s apology. However, it is essential to recognize that individuals’ actions do not define the entire festival. We remain committed to maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment for all participants.

TG: Is IFFI having a positive impact on the local film industry, at the backdrop of allegations that the latter are being left out?

DL: IFFI plays a pivotal role in nurturing the local film industry by providing a platform for emerging talent, promoting regional cinema, and facilitating industry connections. It is helping to create opportunities for local filmmakers to showcase their work, fostering a vibrant and sustainable film ecosystem in Goa.

TG: Overall experience on the hosting of this festival?

DL: Hosting IFFI is a gratifying experience for the Entertainment Society of Goa. It’s an opportunity to bring together diverse voices in cinema, celebrate artistic expression, and create lasting memories. The challenges are met with enthusiasm, and the support of the global film community encourages us to continually improve and innovate. We have also embraced technology to enhance IFFI experience as we leverage digital platforms for film screenings, virtual discussions, and online interactions to engage people worldwide. The influx of filmmakers, artists, and cinephiles has not only enriched the cultural landscape but also boosted tourism and local businesses. ESG also avoided all physical barriers hindering Persons with Disabilities, ensuring seamless entry to all venues
