An illegal landfilling activity in agricultural land has raised the hackles of the locals at Gaunsavaddo, Mapusa.
Unknown persons have dumped mud in the field abutting the road and even constructed a bamboo fencing facing the road.
Locals informed that the landfilling activity has been carried out under the cover of darkness.
They also informed that the illegality was carried out during the weekend.
Local councillor Prakash Bhivshet informed that he has sounded the civic authorities of the incident and was awaiting action.
“When some local residents informed me about the illegal landfilling activity I brought it to the attention of the chief officer and the chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal Council. So far no action has been initiated against the illegality,” Bhivshet told The Goan.
In fact, the entire area consisting of fields and mangroves in Gaunsavaddo is a water catchment area and acts as a sponge for retention of water during the rains.
Incidentally, several pockets in the entire area have been subjected to illegal landfilling with constructions popping up in this area.
Trucks have been dumping debris along the service road adjacent to the NH66 in Gaunsavaddo, Mapusa.
In the past local authorities including the Bardez Mamlatdar have carried out inspections and even seized trucks dumping material by the roadside.
The Mamladar office has also prepared a checklist of several such illegal landfilling activities along the highway in the area.
