As part of efforts to preserve natural and traditional practices, one lakh dung lamps will be made available for sale during Diwali.
Addressing a news conference at the Goshala in Nanus-Valpoi, Sujit Hukkarikar, Goa representative of National Kamadhenu Commission, said lighting dung lamps had been part of traditional culture.
“However with changing lifestyle, people have forgotten this culture and are now celebrating Diwali with earthen lamps. It is necessary to install dung lamps in the houses to preserve this old tradition and to protect cows in the country,” said Hukkarikar.
“About 1 lakh lamps have been made available for sale to celebrate a Kamadhenu Diwali this year. These dung lamps, which are small in size and can hold about 15 grams of oil, are being sold at Rs 5 per lamp at different goshalas in Goa. This will light up a special Diwali celebration all over Goa this year.”
He informed that other products from dung would also be made available for sale.
Laxman Joshi, office bearer of the Valpoi Goshala and Raghunath Dhuri, veterinary officer were also present at the news conference.
