This World Environment Day, perhaps for the first time government offices will be handing over years of electronic waste to a proper e-waste recycler, thanks to an initiative by the Communicare Trust of Panaji.

The Trust, together with the NASSCOM Foundation has been working on e-waste awareness in Goa over the past few months and as a result has collaborated with various government departments.
Speaking to The Goan, environment consultant Sushant Figuerido who is coordinating the project said that the Trust has brought on board government departments who have put together their e-waste to be given away and be disposed off in a scientific manner.
“We have approached all government offices... they have inventorised their e-waste. We will head to these offices and collect this on World Environment Day,” Figuerido said.
The Communicare Trust is not restricting itself to government offices. Across Panaji, the group has set up e-waste collection centres for ‘stakeholders’ to deposit their e-waste.
“Collection points have been set up at several prominent areas in the city. These include Goa Handicrafts Emporia at KTC Panaji, Goa Handicrafts Complex Mala, Goa Handicrafts Outlet at Udyog Bhavan opposite Menezes Braganza Hall, CCP Animal shelter at Santa Inez and the Extension wing of Government Polytechnic at Altinho Panaji,” Figuerido said.
Earlier, the Communicare Trust had built a network through reaching out to schools, companies and other stakeholders to create awareness about e-waste.
“It is part of a nationwide project and is being held in 10 cities across the country.
