Margao’s lone and crucial flyover, linking the commercial capital to down South, is now craving for attention.
Blame it on the apathy and indifference of the PWD, traffic police or the road safety officials, steel rods on the flyover surface have been exposed due to heavy rains, posing danger to motorists.
Citizens pointed out the steel rods may protrude out if the craters are not
filled up.
Built around two decades ago, the Margao flyover has been craving for attention from the PWD authorities and district authorities over the years on the upkeep and maintenance front.
Every monsoon, the patch work carried out by the PWD disappears, leaving motorists, more particularly two-wheeler riders, to negotiate the craters.
The flyover was built by the Konkan Railway Corporation around the time when the railway gate was permanently closed for traffic after the commencement of the KR operation.
The KRC however, has made it clear time and again that the responsibility and upkeep of the flyover rests with the State government.
In fact, KRC Deputy General Manager (Public Relations), Baban Ghatge, has been clear in saying that the flyover was handed over to the State government after its commissioning around two decades ago, adding that it’s now the responsibility of the local authorities to look after its upkeep and maintenance.
A senior official, PWD, National Highways, pointed out that the flyover indeed was indeed in need of repairs and also needs a hot-mix carpet. The work can be carried out only by closing the flyover for traffic, he added.
