NEW DELHI
The Union government is undertaking sustained efforts to modernise India’s power sector through policy reforms, international cooperation, technological upgrades and promotion of green and digital energy solutions, Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
Replying to an unstarred question, Naik said the initiatives aim to ensure reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity supply while strengthening long-term energy security and supporting India’s clean energy transition.
He said the Ministry of Power is actively engaging with foreign governments, multilateral institutions and industry bodies to build partnerships in power generation, transmission and distribution. These engagements are being pursued through global and regional platforms such as G20, BRICS, the International Solar Alliance, Clean Energy Ministerial, SCO, SAARC, BIMSTEC, ASEAN and the One Sun One World One Grid initiative.
Naik said the government has introduced reforms to modernise power laws, improve governance and enhance consumer services. These include measures to ensure timely payment of dues, promote green energy open access, renewable consumption obligations and resource adequacy planning.
He added that under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, infrastructure works worth over ₹2.83 lakh crore have been sanctioned, with focus on smart meters and use of artificial intelligence for demand forecasting and asset management.
The minister said steps have also been taken to boost digitalisation, energy storage and renewable integration to ensure a stable and secure power grid.
