In addition to the Masters and diploma in Psychiatry (eight and two seats respectively), the IPHB is starting three new courses: a Masters in Clinical Psychology, MPhil in Psychiatric Social Work and Post-graduate diploma in psychiatric nursing. For the MPhil degree, those with a Masters in Social Work (MSW) will be eligible to apply. As of now, the IPHB is waiting for the regulatory body at the Centre to give directions about how many seats the courses will have.
Right, now the institute is in the process of recruiting faculty for the courses, said Dr Naik, and once the faculty is in place, they will apply for recognition. “We’re planning to start these courses from the academic year 2019-2020,” Dr Naik informed The Goan. The Goa University has already given them approval for the same. The community outreach programme will also be expanded. For this, counselors appointed in schools have been helping the doctors.
100 more beds in two years
PANAJI: With the number of patients admitted to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) exceeding the capacity of the existing unit, the institute is set to get a facelift, both in terms of infrastructure and the number and quality of services offered.
In addition to the current block which has the capacity to admit 190 patients, the institute will get another block with 100 beds in another 18 to 24 months, said Dr Pradeep Naik, who is currently holding the charge of director of IPHB. The additional block is much-required as the current facility is always full. Right now, 218 patients are admitted, and the 190 bed facility falls short.
In addition to this, the new block will have a courtyard for day care and rehabilitation, which will have activities like yoga, meditation, and physical training for inmates. These activities are currently taking place in a hall, so with the expansion, the IPHB will need more qualified trainers. A proposal for these posts has been submitted to the government. The project will cost Rs 50 crores, and the foundation stone for the same will be laid in the coming week. The project will be carried out by the GSIDC.

PANAJI: A 40-year-old woman, resident of Sirsaim, killed herself on Monday at the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB).
The patient had been admitted to IPHB on December 21, 2018. She was brought dead to the casualty ward of the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) from the IPHB.
She is alleged to have hung herself on the institute premises.
