Justice Jadhav arrives, to begin probe in land-grab

PANAJI
Former Bombay High Court Judge, Justice V K Jadhav arrived in the State on Thursday as the one-man commission is set to begin an inquiry into cases of land-grabbing.

Justice Jadhav is currently accommodated in a hotel as his office in Spaces Building at Patto Plaza will be ready shortly. Sources said that the Justice will be briefed about the First Information Reports (FIRs), complaints received by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) (Land Grab) and the status of the probe in each case/ complaint to understand the mega scam.

“All the relevant documents will be shared with the Commission and experts from related fields will come on board to ensure speedy justice to victims of land frauds,” the source said.

In all probability, the accused will be summoned to join the inquiry, which means all those arrested by the SIT are on the radar of the Commission. “If the society cooperates, the Commission will meet the deadline,” the source added.

On his maiden day in Goa, Advocate Aires Rodrigues met Justice Jadhav with a complaint against MLA Jit Arolkar alleging he grabbed a property belonging to 76-year-old Rawloo Khalap.  Rodrigues in his representation submitted to Justice Jadhav alleged nil response from the SIT despite a complaint filed in July and a reminder sent to the team in the following month.

On August 30, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced appointing the Commission stating that the government is “very serious and wants to settle all cases of land grabbing at the earliest.” However, the Commission was yet to take over owing to lengthy procedures by the government.

The Commission, appointed under the Commission of Inquiries Act, 1952, will have to complete its inquiry in four months and it is also expected to make recommendations on the fate of forged properties and changes in the existing law, if any.
