PANAJI: A 45-year-old tourist from Karnataka died after falling into a 400-foot-deep gorge at Mahadevgad Point in Amboli, a popular monsoon tourism destination in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district, on Tuesday evening.
The tourist has been identified as Dr Ayub Syed, a resident of Jatrat in Nipani, Karnataka.
According to information, Dr Syed had travelled to Amboli along with nine colleagues on Tuesday morning. At around 5 pm, the group was visiting Mahadevgad Point when he reportedly crossed the safety railing and moved towards the edge of the gorge.
He is believed to have lost his balance while standing near the cliff and plunged nearly 400 feet into the valley below.
A local vendor stationed at the viewpoint reportedly witnessed the incident and immediately alerted Dr Syed's companions, following which the authorities were informed.
A rescue operation was launched soon after the incident but was suspended due to heavy rain, dense fog and darkness, which made the terrain unsafe for rescuers. The operation resumed at 6 am this morning, during which Dr Syed's body was recovered by the Sahyadri Adventure Rescue Group, with assistance from the police.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
