Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) achieved a milestone with the keel laying of Yard 1283 — the fourth vessel in the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) series being built for the Indian Navy.
The ceremony took place on Monday and was presided over by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, AVSM, VSM, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.
The keel laying marks continued progress in the Rs 6,200 crore NGOPV project, which includes the construction of seven advanced patrol vessels entirely designed and built in-house by GSL. Each ship will measure 114 metres in length, 14.6 metres in beam, and displace 2,700 tonnes. They will feature dual diesel propulsion systems with Controllable Pitch Propellers and be equipped with indigenous weapons and sensor systems.
Vice Admiral Swaminathan lauded the Ministry of Defence, Indian Navy, and Indian shipbuilding sector for their steadfast pursuit of defence self-reliance.
He praised GSL for the quality and pace of its execution, and acknowledged the shipyard’s focus on delivering critical assets under challenging timelines.
GSL Chairman and Managing Director Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay said the shipyard’s growth reflects its commitment to indigenisation, innovation, and quality. He noted that GSL has emerged as a key player in India’s naval shipbuilding landscape, delivering high indigenous content in its projects.
“These strategic orders reflect the scale of trust and the responsibility placed upon us,” he said, reaffirming GSL’s commitment to building world-class warships rooted in national service.
