CANACONA

The Canacona Congress stepped up its campaign to fight the two Zilla Panchayat seats in Canacona by holding the first-ever meeting with a few aspiring candidates and the block leadership.

At a meeting chaired by South Goa Congress President Joe Dias, Congressmen could narrow down to two ZP candidates for Khola and could only discuss on the three aspiring women candidates for the Poinguinim seat, as they failed to attend the Wednesday meeting.

The Poinguinim ZP seat is reserved for ST women, while the Khola seat is open for general candidates.

Welcoming the decision of the state Congress leadership to fight the upcoming ZP election on party symbol, GPCC General Secretary Janardhan Bhandari said three women had shown keen interest to contest the Poinguinim seat reserved for ST women.

He added that the names of Remy Borges and Rajesh Velip were discussed as both staked their claim to contest on the Congress symbol for the Khola ZP seat.

Borges was a BJP worker until the last assembly elections when he worked against the saffron party, while Velip is a sitting panch in Shristhal Panchayat.

Also present in the meeting included GPCC Secretary Mahadev Desai and Youth leader Pralay Bhagat.
