Plan to promote Goan cuisine, boost passenger comfort

The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has invited open tenders for setting up and operating an ethnic food stall on Platform No. 1 of Tivim Railway Station.

The stall, which will be licensed for a period of nine years, aims to promote local cuisine while improving passenger amenities at one of North Goa’s busiest railway hubs.

According to the tender document made available on the official KRCL website, the food stall is intended to serve traditional and regional dishes, giving travellers a taste of India’s culinary diversity.

The tender outlines a detailed list of approved menu items “ including local favourites like bisibele bath, puliyogare, kesari bath, golibaje, and masala dosa “ each with specified portion sizes and fixed prices, ensuring affordability and standardisation.

The successful bidder will be selected through a transparent two-part bidding process involving technical and financial bids. Applicants must demonstrate their capability to run a food stall in compliance with railway standards for hygiene, safety, and service. The highest qualified bidder quoting the annual licence fee will be awarded the contract. KRCL has set the tender value at Rs 1.25 lakh.

In addition to the commercial aspects, the tender document stresses strict adherence to cleanliness and public safety. The licensee will be responsible for maintaining hygiene at the stall, ensuring proper waste disposal, and operating during stipulated hours without causing inconvenience to passengers.

Local entrepreneurs have welcomed the move, seeing it as an opportunity to showcase Goan and coastal cuisine to domestic and international travellers who pass through Tivim.

Tivim Station, one of the major gateways to North Goa, witnesses heavy tourist and commuter traffic throughout the year. The proposed ethnic stall is part of KRCL’s ongoing initiative to enhance passenger experience through diverse and quality food options across its network.

The stall is expected to begin operations later this year, adding a distinctly local flavour to Tivim Station’s food options.
