In a shocking incident that has shook Karnataka police, a senior police official has ended his life under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday.
Chikkamagaluru DySP Kallappa Handibag, who was reportedly absconding since couple of months after a kidnap case was filed against him, was found hanging at his wife's grandparents' house at Murgod village in Savadatti taluka, about 80 kms from here.
Handibag along with his wife Vidya and one-year-old son had arrived in the village in a car at about 9 am and after having tea he went to take bath at around 9.30 am. Since he did not return for a long time, the members at the house broke open the door only to find him hanging to a roof hook using a lungi which he had wore.
The family members brought his body down and rushed him to Primary Health Centre at Savadatti, from where he was shifted to KLES Hospital. However, he was declared dead in the hospital.
His wife, Vidya told news persons that her husband was disturbed and distressed after knowing a kidnapping case was filed against him, and did not speak much with her. She wept all the way while travelling from Chikkamagalur to Belagavi. “He had gone into depression,” she said.
Son of retired teacher, Chickmagaluru DySP Kallappa Handibag, who allegedly ended his life by hanging, was wise and smart officer and a teacher by profession. He had cleared the state public service commission examination in first attempt. Hailing from a financially poor family, his ambition was to become a good police officer and serve the nation.
Speaking to the media, Vidya refuted allegations against her husband and said her husband who was a smart and upright police officer was victimized by the system.
