Local comunidade plants 500 saplings at Loliem

CANACONA

The Comunidade of Loliem-Polem celebrated Van Mahotsav by planting over 500 saplings in the eco-sensitive Madditolop area on Friday.

The tree plantation drive was organised by the Comunidade in collaboration with the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, APRUP Multipurpose Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society Ltd, Loliem, and the students, teachers and staff of S S Angle Higher Secondary School, Maxem.

“Protecting Mother Earth is our shared civic duty. By planting 500 fruit and flowering trees, we are not just growing greenery but also creating a safe habitat for birds, insects and future generations,” said Comunidade President Vishwajit Varik.

Administrator of Comunidades (South Zone) Deepak P Vaingankar praised the initiative, describing it as a meaningful contribution to biodiversity restoration and environmental conservation.

Held under the theme of biodiversity restoration and community-led conservation, the drive brought together volunteers, students, parents and teachers. Around 500 fruit-bearing and flowering saplings were planted at Laatbai, Madditolop, to strengthen the local ecosystem and promote a greener future.

Those present included Comunidade President Vishwajit Varik, Attorney Bhushan P Gaonkar, Treasurer Madhav Shastri and other committee members, APRUP MPACS Ltd President Eknath Prabhu Gaonkar, Forest Department Range Officers Ashveta Dessai and Navnath Gaude of the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, S S Angle Higher Secondary School Principal Hemant Kamat, PTA Chairperson Kalpita Naik, PTA Secretary Trupti Azgaonkar, and other education and PTA representatives.
