While a few vendors of the Vasco fruit and vegetable market may be unhappy over the recent encroachment drive by Mormugao Municipal Council, Vascokars from all walks of life and various sections have appreciated the efforts of the MMC in clearing the encroachments across the city especially the market area.
Many of the youth from Vasco have even resorted to social media to shower praises on MMC Chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar and MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes over the anti-encroachment initiative.
Resident of Vasco, Daniel Periera, speaking to the Goan said that this was what was expected from the civic body. “All these years this action should have been taken. I wonder how the vendors managed to work without renewal of licenses all this while. Nevertheless, now the MMC has acted tough and we hope this is not a temporary affair. The entire port town looks neat and now it’s comfortable to walk into the market. MMC must not bow to the monopoly of the vendors. The council is doing a great job and it’s better to be late than never. This drive must continue immaterial of any pressure on the Chairperson or the Councillors for the larger interest of the public,” said Periera.
Meanwhile Convenor of NGO Goa First, Parshuram Sonurlekar said that he had planned to file a PIL against rising encroachment in Vasco. “The illegalities have to be dealt with an iron fist and the action has to continue. All this while, the encroachers had enjoyed but now they have been taken to task. I initially thought the encroachment drive was an eye wash but looking at the present momentum, I felt the MMC has finally swung into action. The drive must not stop and there should be no political interference. I appeal to the council to clear the encroachment across the city and not bow down to any pressure. The MMC has indeed done a commendable job,” said Sonurlekar.
