Benaulim residents on Thursday made a strong case for safety measures near the western bypass underpass on the Benaulim-Varca road and early completion of the culvert under construction.
Led by social activist Santan Pereira, the citizens wondered why work on the culvert on the Benaulim-Varca has been dragging on for the last one year now. They have claimed that the incomplete work has only added to the traffic congestion and accidents on the road.
Pereira said the local residents had questioned the work on the culvert over its height compared to the existing road. “Since then, the work has not progressed, leave alone its completion till date”, he said, adding that the situation at the site has resulted in road accidents.
They have also raised serious concern over the condition of the existing road, saying that motorists avoid the damaged stretch and ply on the balance stretch, resulting in accidents.
“The locals had approached all the authorities with a plea to implement safety measures near the western bypass underpass at the Mercado mall. Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas had also raised the issue on the floor of the House. However, there is no improvement in the road condition. The authorities have still not put safety measures in place”, Pereira.
He said the local residents have been left with no option than to place barrels on the road to act as a barricade divider to avoid accidents.
