Lone ferry puts Divar locals to hardship

Locals from Divar were put to hardship once again, and this time it was due to the operation of a lone ferry from Divar to the Old Goa route on Sunday morning.

What made the situation worse was that there were several weddings underway in the village due to which the lone ferry was not enough to transport people to and fro from the island, resulting in long queues of vehicles on both the sides.

Speaking to The Goan, a villager Chillya Sawant said the problem began since 9 am with only one ferry operating on the route. “The result was that the queue of vehicles had reached about 1 km long,” Sawant said while stating that a bridge is the only solution for such problems which have been occurring time and again.

MGP’s Cumbarjua president Narayan Verlekar, who himself was stuck in the queue for over one hour, informed that it is unfortunate that such incidents occur which puts the locals to a lot of hardship.

“When I inquired with the ferry staff, they informed that one of the ferries has been diverted to Vanxim as there is a feast there,” Verlekar said, and added that the said ferry was put in operation on the Divar-Old Goa route only at about 12 noon.

“Some locals, fed up with the waiting, went all the way and boarded the Divar-Ribandar ferry,” he added.
