The entrance gate to the railway property on Margao’s Station Road still remains shut to stop miscreants from taking shelter inside. Anti-social activity, however, continues unabated on this road. Traders, however, claimed that some sex workers have disappeared in the last few days, but the gang responsible for terrorizing the people on the station road continues to have a field day. If traders are to be believed the gang members continue to loot the people of their cell phones in the afternoons and late evenings. A trader said just two days a miscreant had snatched a cell phone of a scooter rider before making good his escape. “Unless the police nab the members of the gang responsible for the petty offense, anti-social activity on the station road will not stop,” a trader said. After the high-level meeting called by the South Goa District Collector Ajit Roy upon the request of Margao MLA and Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat to discuss the anti-social activities on this road, the Margao police make occasional presence in the area. Salcete Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar had on the very same day managed to shut the entrance gate of the railway property to keep anti-socials from taking shelter inside after committing offences. Traders, however, want the men-in-uniform to break the backbone of the gang to ensure a full stop to the anti-social activities. “Leave alone the two-wheeler riders and strangers, even we are not safe in our small stalls. We have no option but equip ourselves with dandas inside our premises as a safety measure," a trader added. “Motorists have stopped using the railway footbridge in the late evenings for fear of being looted by the miscreants,” he said. While beggars and drunkards continue to loiter around the Station Road area, the authorities have no plan in place to house these homeless people and anti-socials continue to have a field day.
