An elderly couple from Dando-Velsao had a lucky escape after a coconut tree came crashing down on their car near the Our Lady of Assumption Church in Velsao early Thursday morning.
The couple, Pedro Anton Fernandes and his wife, Maria Satira Marquis, had arrived to the church in the morning to attend the early morning Mass when the incident occurred.
While Maria Satira was injured and faced a dislocated shoulder, she still attended the Mass before leaving for the hospital for treatment.
“My wife and I left from our house early morning and we witnessed heavy rain and storms as we reached the church,” said Pedro Anton Fernandes. “We suddenly saw trees swaying as we reached the church compound and we decided to park our car near the church compound.”
“We decided to sit in the car for some time for the rain to subside as we had reached a little early, when suddenly a coconut tree fell on our car while we were still inside in the car.”
“I somehow managed to get out of the car and immediately pulled my wife out of the mangled car and I am thankful to the divine who saved us while we had gone to attend Mass,” said Fernandes.
Maria Satira said that she was trapped in the car when the tree fell on their vehicle.
“My husband pulled me out of the car. I was shaken and in pain, but I decided to attend Mass to thank God for this miracle and we were taken to the hospital after the Mass was over. I suffered a dislocated shoulder. The doctors have fixed it back and I am now taking rest at home,” said Marquis.
