After traders expressed their anger and resentment over the sanitation fees, the Shadow Council of Margao has joined the bandwagon, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the “unjustified” garbage fees and implementation of proper fees by initiating data collection of various types of premises.
The Shadow Council for Margao has now planned a protest dharna in front of the municipal building on April 11 and has requested all citizens and owners of premises to join in the protest.
Condemning the loot of loyal taxpayers of Margao, Shadow Council of Margao convenor Savio Coutinho said the newly adopted rates of sanitation fees for licensed commercial establishments exhibits a purely unjust mode of fleecing and extortion of money from loyal taxpayers of Margao. “It is indeed a shocker for the taxpayers of Margao, to commence the new financial year with huge tax burden imposed on them (commercial establishments) by the Council,” he said.
The SCM stated that at a time when the very existence of bars and restaurants is in doubt in view of the court order, the MMC in its wisdom is demanding from them Rs 54,000 for a year.
While the assessed premises were forced to bear the brunt, the thousands of unassessed premises were left without having to pay any charges. “The Council did not feel any guilt to charge Garbage fees from the locked premises who do not generate any waste, but showered generosity on unassessed premises that generated waste,” Coutinho added.
