PANAJI
Mahila Congress members on Wednesday marched from Congress House to the Municipal Market complex in Panaji seeking justice for minor rape victims in Kathua and Unnao while also chanting slogans for the safety of women and girls in the country.
Mahila Congress president Pratima Coutinho said that the “black day” has been organized in view of the increasing number of brutal acts of rape and torture carried out against children.
“We condemn BJP’s prime Minsiter Narendra Modi, its ministers and leaders. Modi should resign on moral grounds. Why is the government silent on the issue? Deliver justice to these families. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao slogans are hollow. People should save their girl child from this party instead,” she declared.
Coutinho questioned why the BJP is extending protection to the rapists by delaying justice to the child victims. “Where are the tall BJP leaders Smriti Irani, Uma Bharati, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhachchan? Where are these female stalwarts of Indian politics? Why have the alliance partners kept quiet in Goa?” she demanded.
Mahila Congress leader Beena Naik urged the BJP to withdraw its support to the Jammu and Kashmir government to prove the seriousness and sincerity of its stance on the issue. “BJP has claimed that they will amend the POCSO Act to introduce death penalty for child rape. Why not bring in an ordinance?” she asked.
Mahila Congress South Goa president Savitri Kavlekar explained that the intention of the morcha is to awaken the conscience of each and every person out there about the horror of rape and child rape. She stated, “The government has failed to keep women and girl child safe in this country.”
