Alertness due to the Sagar Kavach drill helped police net a sarpanch from a Maharashtra village on charges of illegally roaming with a revolver of .32 bore along with seven cartridges in the State.
Calangute police arrested the accused, Mahesh Hanumant Bhondwe (25) of Wadgaon in Aurangabad-Maharashtra for illegal possession of a revolver and cartridges.
The accused is the sarpanch of Bajajnagar in Aurangabad.
According to police, a scuffle took place between the accused and a group of persons at Calangute parking lot, during which the accused was suspected to be in possession of a revolver. And although the accused fled from the site in his vehicle (MH-20-CU-0577), Calangute police formed teams and fanned the village tracing him to Dolphin circle.
During the search, police recovered one revolver of .32 bore and seven live cartridges from the accused.
The accused produced an arms license for the weapon.
However, on verification, it was found that the license was valid only in Maharashtra.
