In a major haul, Karnataka authorities seized 4356 litres of illicit alcohol spirit and confiscated unknown medicines and the transport vehicle, all worth Rs 30,47,750, at Majali checkpost.
According to reports, a truck bearing registration number KL-58 F -3571 after crossing Goa border at Polem check-post was intercepted 100 mtrs away by Karnataka officials at Majali checkpost at about 6 am on Saturday.
The Karnataka sleuths, who were told the truck was carrying medicines to Cochin-Kerala, were suspicious and opened one of the over 1000 boxes to find a 25-litre can containing spirit.
On further examination, 125 number of 25 litres plastic cans carrying spirit were found, all valued at Rs 2.53 lakh.
The lorry driver and cleaner were placed under arrest and 1000 medicine boxes worth Rs 7.14 lakh and lorry worth Rs 20.80 lakh were impounded by the Karnataka authorities.
All the seized material is valued at Rs 30.47 lakh, informed a Karnataka excise official at Majali checkpost.
With this yet another seizure of illegal contraband of spirit, allegedly from Goa, has raised questions on the State’s border checks at Polem.
Meanwhile, the police and excise sleuths from Karnataka at Majali checkpost came in for praise for their alertness.
