Masked attacker entered shop pretending to sell gold

In an incident that sparked outrage in the city, a lone attacker hit a jewellery shop owner with a hammer at a shop in Borda before escaping.
During the scuffle, the jewellery owner, Sohan Raikar, was injured and rushed to South Goa District Hospital with bleeding wounds.
The incident took place at around 6.30 pm on Tuesday while Raikar was at his shop on the busy Borda road. The accused, who is believed to have covered his face and head with a mask, entered the shop under the pretext of selling gold ornaments belonging to his mother.
However, he is reported to have opened his bag, taken out a hammer, and started attacking the young businessman.
A scuffle is believed to have taken place before the attacker escaped.
Police said the accused could not steal any jewellery from the shop.
Fatorda police have called in a fingerprint expert and a sniffer dog to help with the investigation.
Fatorda police, led by PI Nathan Almeida, have started the investigation. Sub-Divisional Police Officer, DySP Sidhant Shirodkar, said the Fatorda police have registered a case of assault against the attacker.
“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused could not lift away any jewellery from the shop. The police is on the job to ascertain the motive behind the assault case,” he said.
