CANACONA
A 23-year-old man from West Bengal drowned while kayaking with two others in the Talpona river at Sadolxem, Canacona, on Saturday.
According to police, the deceased, Rakesh Singh Roy, was working as a housekeeping staff member at Element Homestay in Sadolxem.
He had gone for a joy ride in a kayak with Bisharlang Shylla, 24, from Meghalaya, and Rupesh Kumar Sahu, 21, from Gumla, Jharkhand, after lunch at around 3.30 pm.
Police said the kayak, which had been kept covered during the off-season, was taken by the three without informing its owner. While returning from the ride and nearing the riverbank, Roy jumped into the water, causing the kayak to overturn. All three fell into the river.
Shylla and Sahu managed to swim to safety, but Roy went missing. Canacona police received information from PCR Margao at around 5.40 pm.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel began a search operation and recovered Roy’s body from the river at around 6.30 pm.
Police conducted a scene inspection and inquest panchanama. The body was preserved at South Goa District Hospital, Margao, for medico-legal formalities.
Canacona police have registered an unnatural death case under Section 194 of the BNSS, 2023. Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Babu Dessai.
