He was speaking during a chat session with the reporters, which was organised by Pernem Journalists Association at Sopte’s office at Mandrem on Friday.
Sopte praised the association members for organising the chat session. “The government is made aware about social issues when journalists highlight them. The journalists gave me a chance to discuss the problems with them and I expect them to organise such sessions once in two months,” he added.
Stating that the coastal areas in the constituency are not yet developed, Sopte said: “In April and May, many tourists visit the beaches in the constituency, but there are no facilities like changing rooms, parking place, toilets and drinking water.”
“Illegal activities like drugs, gambling, prostitution, etc, won’t be tolerated in the coastal areas of Mandrem constituency, as the youth are getting seriously affected,” he said.
Sopte said in order to tackle unemployment problem in the constituency, he would introduce an environment friendly starred hotel project by taking the people into confidence.
He also criticised the GMR Company for performing Bhoomipujan of the land without inviting the two local MLAs of Pernem taluka.
He also expressed his anger over menace of Lamani along the coast and said such activities won’t be tolerated.
Sopte said many crimes take place during the tourist season in Mandrem constituency but the police have failed to reach the site on time as there is only one police station in Pernem. “I will request the government to have an independent police station for Mandrem constituency,” Sopte said.
