Calangute Police have arrested a woman from Mangaluru in connection with the death of former driver of ex-minister of Karnataka and Udupi-based water sports entrepreneur whose body was found in a resort room at Calangute on June 30.
The accused, identified as Akshata alias Rupashree C had allegedly fled Goa after the incident.
Acting on specific information about her whereabouts, a Calangute Police team travelled to Karnataka and, after a three-day search conducted with the assistance of the Karnataka Police, apprehended her in Mangaluru on Friday.
She has been placed under transit remand and is expected to be brought to Goa on Saturday morning.
Police are expected to question her to establish the sequence of events leading to the victim’s death and ascertain the nature of the substance allegedly administered to him before the incident.
According to the police, the victim and the accused were together in a room at a Calangute resort on the day of the incident.
Police suspect that the accused administered an intoxicating substance to him before allegedly fleeing with his gold chain and wallet. His body was later found inside the room.
The murder case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim's brother, Chetan Suvarna.
The accused has been booked under Sections 123, 309 and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police are also examining the accused's possible involvement in similar offences reported earlier.
In April this year, a tourist from Gujarat, Tomesh Yadav, lodged a complaint alleging that he had been drugged and robbed of Rs 2.4 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 15.4 lakh after coming into contact with a woman in casino. Police are probing whether there is any connection between the two cases.
The accused's interrogation is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding victim's death and determine whether any additional persons were involved in the incident.
