MAPUSA
The much-needed dialysis facility has kick-started in the North Goa District Hospital (Asilo) Mapusa, bringing cheer to kidney patients in Bardez and far north.
A five-bedded dialysis unit has been set up in the district hospital, which will be expanded to eight in the near future. The State government has outsourced the dialysis facility to Apex Kidney Care, a Mumbai-based dialysis centre. So far, on an average, five to six dialysis sittings are being conducted daily in the hospital since the service was started on December 14, 2017.
"The response although tepid, initially, is expected to increase as the word gets around," said Dr Geeta Kakodkar, Medical Superintendent of Asilo, who was enthused of having started yet another facility in the government hospital.
Depending on the flow of the patients, Apex Kidney Care is expected to increase the service to eight machines.
Officials of the Apex Kidney Care informed that patients interested of availing the service should have valid recommendation of a nephrologist, besides having the Deen Dayal Swasthya Yojana (DDSSY) and Aadhaar cards.
For Apex Kidney Care, the dialysis unit at the Asilo is the third unit in Goa. It has been carrying out dialysis operations at Savaikar Hospital, Ponda and Sanjivani Hospital in Vasco.
The Mumbai-based centre is expected to start dialysis units at four other government hospitals in the State, Navelim, Ponda, Balli and Valpoi.
"We are going to observe the functioning of the unit at the Mapusa hospital and gradually decide to expand our operations at the other government hospitals," said Dr Shrirang Bichu, senior Nephrologist and in-charge of Goa operations of Apex Kidney Care.
Apex Kidney Care offers dialysis facility at 55 centres in nine states around the
country.
The dialysis facility at Asilo will come as a big boost for kidney patients in the North, as a dialysis unit was a long pending demand from the people in Bardez and far North.
